The last time the United States played for a bronze medal was in 2016, where Team USA bested Sweden 8-3 in a beatdown of a match. This year, the United States heads into the match after missing out on the gold medal game due to a 4-2 loss to Sweden. Kieffer Bellows and Brady Tkachuk had the only two goals for the Americans in the semifinal match to Sweden, where the difference was a 38-second span in which Team USA allowed a pair of shorthanded goals.
The Czech Republic stands in opposition to Team USA after falling 7-2 to the Canadians in its semifinal match Thursday evening. New York Rangers draft pick Filip Chytil and Chicago Blackhawks draft pick Jakub Galvas are two notable players to watch, along with one of the tournament’s top scorers Martin Necas.
During the round robin, the Czechs had just one loss to Sweden as they went 3-0-0-1 for second place in Group B.
In goal, the Americans may roll with Jake Oettinger despite the netminder playing in relief in the semifinal match. Team USA also has Joseph Woll, who has started most of the World Juniors, waiting in the wings as well.
